Thoughts on the Sabre

Recommended Posts

So I was taking the Sabre out for a few test flights over the last few days.  I was really excited about the ship.  I love the look of it and it seems like it would be a great ship to fly.  However, after flying the Super Hornet a few weeks ago I just didn't like the Sabre as much as I thought I would.  Don't get me wrong, it's a great ship and I still think it is my favorite visually.  However, I felt like I slid around in it a lot and it seemed harder to control than other ships.  I know the flight model isn't done yet and the sabre is a fast ship.  It just wasn't as maneuverable as I thought it would be.

Also I wish both set of guns lined up.  Gimbaled or not, either way it would be nice if both matched up.

I was wondering what you all thought of the ship.  I'm a decent pilot, but I know a lot of you have more experience than me, especially in a wider variety of ships and situations.  I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this guy.

I guess this is a ship I really want to like and am struggling with doing so.  Ideas?  Thoughts?  Comments?

Personally I really like the saber, I have it set up as all gimbaled lasers and thoroughly enjoy that. In my opinion it's better than the super hornet, mostly because once all 4 weapons where on gimbals I am able to get them on target much quicker, and hold them on target longer than I can with the super hornets 5-6 guns. While the super hornet is more armored, it's sluggishness means that it is going to take every hit that is thrown at it. Granted, that is all my opinion, and everyone has different preferences, and it looks like a rebalance pass is coming so it could all change.

Just want to start out by saying I am a big SH fan. I can keep my weapons on target a lot longer than I can in the sabre. I have a SH and two sabre, one with fixed weapons and one with gimbaled weapons. But if I was going sabre I go all fixed weapons. I like the extra DPS you have. I see the problem most people have with the SH and not keeping track of targets as being the way the fly the ship. They try flying the SH like it a sabre. Top speed/full throttle everywhere. And doing that you never turn as fast as the sabre. I do burst of speed and if I see a ship coming at me I am throttle fully off/ at least 80%, side strafe and strafing up or down. As it going past I am turning, shooting and throttling back up to full. As you are not going as fast you can turn much faster and keep on that target much longer. You loss them for a second or two as they go past but because you turn so fast you are right back on them. A lot faster than they can turn to attack you again or their shield can recharge.

Back to the Sabre it a great ship and I see it only getting better. When the stealth game play comes in it be amazing to have. But you can always put the armor of the Hornet ghost on the SH. But not going to be half as good as the Sabre. It has great weapons on it and good shields. The armor not the best but can take a little damage. Over all it a great ship and if you want a stealthy little ship buy it. But I say if you want something for escort missions or out and out combat I go the SH. But it all down to the way you fly your ship and what you like.

You have to have the gimbal mount for tier 3. All the weapon mount on the sabre is T3. Keep in mind, when you gimbal the weapons, they go a tier down.

The easiest way to equip mounts and weapons is in the hangar. It can also be done on port Olisar, but with the troll and bugs, its easier in the hangar

That is all really interesting.  I still wonder if the SH is the ship for me, but I can definitely see how either going all gimbaled or all fixed weapons would make the sabre a lot more deadly.

When you use all fixed weapons, do you find that it is easier to use a joystick than the mouse and keyboard?

Yes all the hornet stuff can be moved about to all hornets. Only thing that cant is be moved is the bigger power plant on the SH and the second seat in the SH. But all the other stuff can be moved about. Or at least that what they are saying at this time.

I have stuck 2 panthers on my Sabre to ditch the gimbals, I like that high DPS! CF-227s are the way for me. Yesterday I put 2 GT-870s on the M50, damn I was wrecking those vanduuls! I'm looking now into ways to beef up the Vanguard, so far I like how the Vanguard has strong armor and shields in the PU, the pirates have a hard time killing me :D

The Aegis Sabre was my first ship and it is still the one ship that I most enjoy flying. My other ships are great and all, but it isn't the flying aspect that I like about them, whereas I just thoroughly enjoy flying my Sabre.

It is still too early to know much of anything for sure since they're changing the flight dynamics and various things like armor and stealth are still being developed. That said, I *think* the Sabre will be a great ship to fly in formation and use wing-man tactics. It should be able to come in fast and undetected, engage and hopefully kill or disable the targets, and then rapidly disengage when time. I do *not* think it is a ship to use for standing toe to toe in a fire fight, and I don't think it is particularly well suited for a closed battle simulation like Arena Commander (which isn't to say you can't do well with it there... just that you could probably do better with another ship).

As far as the sliding and turn speed, I think some of that can be corrected by using the various flight mode settings (COMSTAB, decoupled). That said, the upcoming flight dynamics changes may upend everything we have known and experienced so far (with less "space jousting"), so we'll have to wait and see how things look when that comes out with 2.6. I find the ship to be highly maneuverable with my HOTAS though, to the point that I usually don't bother with gimbals at all.

And, as you said, it looks awesome. I get in the cockpit, turn on external camera, and in my best Billy Crystal (as Fernando) voice say to myself "You look marvelous!"

Yeah, it certainly is a nice looking ship!

I do think I will eventually get a HOTAS for Star Citizen, but may wait a bit to see how everything ends up.

One thing I probably do need to do is learn more about COMSTAB and decoupled mode.  That will probably give me more options in fights and things.  I don't even know what COMSTAB does to be honest :)  I've been enjoying learning dogfighting and things so I'll have to work on those next.

Thanks!
